Is there a difference between residential and business service from Sparklight?
Yes. While both residential and business Internet operate over the same reliable digital network, Sparklight Business Solution’s Internet is designed for meeting the broadband capacity and features relative to business needs. Additionally, Sparklight Business Solution’s customers receive service order and repair priority over everyone else on the network.
What do I need to know about setting up Sparklight Business Solution’s static IP service?
The customer is responsible for any equipment beyond the cable modem. Sparklight Business Solutions does not setup or configure customer routers or firewalls & support currently stops at the cable modem. It may be a good idea to have a member of your IT department or technical support on site the day of the install. Customers with multiple static IP addresses will share the provisioned bandwidth. The total available bandwidth will not exceed the provisioned bandwidth regardless of the number of IP address assigned to the account.
Customers who plan to run a server (email or otherwise), will need to look at utilizing at least (1) static IP option. The only way to run reverse DNS is through a static IP address. This device will need to be visible to the modem and will not work behind a router or firewall.
What is the difference between static and dynamic IP addresses?
Dynamic IPs are subject to change for a number of reasons. This type of IP address is pulled out of a pool of available addresses within the Sparklight Business system. Static IPs are available in 1, 5 and 13 block configurations. A compatible Gateway is required for static IP addresses. The customer's Static IP is always the same, which is a necessity when you are running a web server, mail server or any piece of equipment that needs to have the same IP address every time you access it.
In order to take advantage of our fastest speeds, there are certain infrastructure requirements that you may need to check.
Modem: Are you using a DOCSIS 3 modem? To reach speeds over 100 Mbps, you will need to use a D3 modem.
Router: If you are using your own router, is the equipment you own capable of reaching max speeds? Confirm that your equipment is rated to handle speeds greater than 100 Mbps.
Wiring: Is your wiring (Ethernet cabling) Cat5E or Cat6E? Standard Cat5 Ethernet cable may hinder your ability to go over 100 Mbps. By installing Cat5E or Cat6E, you can ensure you’re receiving the fastest speed.
Devices: Are the devices that are you using to connect to the data service capable of reaching 500 Mbps or greater speeds? Check to see if your computers or wireless devices are gigabit capable or equipped with gigabit Ethernet adapters.
Firewall: Is your firewall limited in terms of the traffic it can accommodate? If your IT personnel installed a firewall, they can tell you if there are any limitations on the amount of traffic that can be routed to the internet.
If you have any questions about whether or not you can support our fastest speeds, be sure to check with your IT personnel or give us a call at 877.570.0500 to consult one of our knowledgeable representatives.
