Best and Trending Ideas for New Businesses in the U.S.
The best new business ideas are being fueled by an ongoing health and wellness trend in the U.S., and by customer demand for convenience and eco-friendly products and services, like startups that offer mobile pet services or sustainable lawn and garden care.
More than 5 million new business applications have been filed every year since 2021, reports the U.S Census Bureau. Last year, according to Census data, 5.9 million businesses were formed, marking an 8 percent increase over 2024 statistics.
It appears the entrepreneurship momentum is on track this year too. Business applications for June 2026, adjusted for seasonal variation, were 531,423, an increase of 1.1 percent compared to May 2026, says the Census Bureau.
What are the best businesses to start right now?
“The best business ideas for 2026 are ones that have clear market demand, the potential for scalability and profit, and the ability to adapt to changing technologies and customer demands,” says a post by CO, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce website for small businesses.
Here’s a quick look at some of the best and trending new business ideas.
Non-Alcoholic Beverage Businesses on the Rise
This new business trend is backed by lifestyle polls that show a steady decline in the number of people drinking alcohol, creating a demand for more non-alcoholic options.
A Gallup poll last year found that 54 percent of U.S. adults consume alcohol, down from 58 percent in 2024 and 62 percent in 2023.
The most pronounced decline is among 18- to 34-year-olds, with only half of this group reporting drinking alcohol, down from 59 percent who said they did in 2023.
The decreasing number of alcohol consumers, along with a rise in the number of people taking GPL‑1 drugs, which typically reduces alcohol cravings, presents an increased demand for businesses that offer non-alcohol-based beverages, says an article on the Main Street America (MSA) website.
“As one market declines, logic would suggest a corresponding rise in alternatives, such as late-night coffee and non-alcoholic venues,” writes Matt Wagner, the chief innovation officer for MSA, a nonprofit that advocates for and promotes revitalization and historic preservation of older downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts.
Health-Focused Food and Plant-Based Businesses
A wellness trend is driving new business formations, particularly for more vegetarian and health-driven offerings whether it’s on menus or product creation.
“The industry is adapting to this new reality where food inflation and consumers' rising awareness of hyper or ultra-processed food have impacted food consumption habits,” says a report published in May by Statistica.
Consumers cited health benefits as the key reason for choosing to eat meat substitutes, such as plant based meat alternatives, according to the company’s research.
“While moral and environmental concerns are among the important motivators to go meatless, health concerns remain the driving force for food consumers,” explains Statistica. “Vegans, vegetarians, and those who consume meat substitutes are all looking out to eat healthier.”
Also, the MSA article points to high beef prices and the increased incidence of Alpha-Gal, a food allergy resulting from a particular tick bite, as creating increased demand for new businesses that have non-meat menus.
Ecommerce Clothing Businesses Continue to Grow
The clothing industry is one of the fastest growing sectors for new businesses in the U.S., research indicates.
The uptick in startups that sell clothing can be attributed in part to the prevalence of ecommerce, which presents lower entry barriers to startups in this sector, says a Forbes article by Esha Chhabra.
Ninety-eight percent of retailers in the U.S. are small businesses, employing fewer than 50 employees, according to the National Retail Federation.
Eco-Friendly Business Opportunities
Sustainable living and climate-conscious consumers are creating a demand for new businesses that provide eco-friendly products or services.
“A sustainable lawn care business can stand out by using electric or battery-powered equipment, drought-resistant plants, organic fertilizers, and native landscaping techniques that reduce water use and chemical runoff,” says the CO blog.
“Eco-friendly curb appeal can be a huge selling point in drought-prone states with strict water conservation rules.”
Mobile Pet Services and Pet Care Businesses
Rising pet ownership along with consumer demand for convenience and personalized services, are fueling growth in the mobile pet services industry, according to an analysis by Intel Market Research.
“These services include bathing, brushing, nail trimming, and haircuts for dogs and cats, offering convenience for pet owners while reducing stress for animals accustomed to familiar environments,” it says.
Trending in this sector are businesses that offer add-on options for flea treatments and teeth cleaning, and those with scheduling apps for customers to book appointments, the Intel Market Research report says.
Further, it notes, “The senior pet care market represents $5.2 billion in untapped potential for mobile groomers, with arthritic and anxiety-prone pets benefiting most from in-home service models.”
