Which Business Awards Are Actually Worth Pursuing?
And The Winner Is…
Making sense of business awards—and deciding which ones are actually worth it
In the business world, recognition is everywhere. “Best Of.” “Top 40 Under 40.” “Fastest Growing.” “Top Workplace.” It can feel like there’s an award for just about everything—and in many ways, there is.
For small and mid-sized businesses, these accolades can be powerful. They can validate your work, energize your team, and elevate your brand in the eyes of customers and prospects. But not all awards are created equal. Some carry real prestige. Others…not so much.
So how do you tell the difference—and more importantly, how do you make them work for you?
The Allure of Recognition
At their best, awards do three things exceptionally well:
- Build credibility – Third-party validation can carry more weight than anything you say about yourself.
- Boost morale – Recognition reinforces culture and gives your team something to rally around.
- Increase visibility – Many awards come with built-in PR, from press releases to social promotion.
A well-earned accolade can open doors. It gives prospects a reason to take a closer look and gives current customers a reason to feel good about choosing you.
But that’s the ideal. The reality requires a bit more discernment.
Prestige vs. Participation Trophies
Some awards are highly competitive, judged by industry experts, and rooted in meaningful criteria. Think regional business journals, industry associations, or peer-reviewed recognitions. These tend to carry weight because they’re selective and transparent.
Others operate on a looser model. If you’ve ever received an email that says, “Congratulations! You’ve been selected…”—followed by a request for a fee to accept or promote the award—you’ve likely encountered the softer side of the spectrum.
That doesn’t automatically make them scams, but it does raise important questions:
- How are winners chosen?
- Who else is being recognized?
- Is there a judging panel—or just a nomination form?
- What exactly are you paying for?
If the primary value is a badge you can download after paying a fee, you’re not being recognized—you’re being marketed to.
The Cost of Chasing Awards
Even legitimate awards come with a cost. Sometimes it’s a submission fee. More often, it’s time. Applications can be extensive, requiring detailed narratives, data, and supporting materials.
For a small business, that’s a meaningful investment of resources. Before diving in, it’s worth asking:
- Does this align with our goals?
- Will our audience recognize or value this award?
- Do we have a realistic chance of winning?
Being selective isn’t just practical—it’s strategic. A few well-chosen awards can be far more impactful than a long list of lesser-known recognitions.
Leveraging the Win
Winning an award is only the beginning. The real value comes from how you use it. A thoughtful rollout can extend the life of a win well beyond the announcement:
- Share the news across your website and social channels
- Incorporate it into email signatures and marketing materials
- Highlight the people behind the achievement—your team
- Use it as a conversation starter with prospects and partners
And don’t underestimate the internal impact. Celebrating a win with your team reinforces culture and reminds everyone that their work matters.
When Not to Apply
Sometimes the smartest move is to pass. If an award doesn’t align with your brand, lacks credibility, or feels transactional, it’s okay to opt out. Not every opportunity is worth pursuing, and chasing recognition for its own sake can dilute your message.
There’s also something to be said for earning recognition organically. Customer loyalty, strong reviews, and community reputation often carry more weight than any badge.
A Balanced Approach
Awards can be meaningful. They can tell a story about who you are, what you value, and how you show up in your industry. But they’re most effective when they’re part of a broader strategy—not the strategy itself.
Focus on doing great work. Serve your customers well. Build a culture your team is proud of. Then, when the right opportunity comes along, go for it. Because the best awards don’t just recognize success. They reflect it.
